When it comes to large-scale Business-to-Business (B2B) sales operations, the customer journey is drastically different from a standard e-commerce experience. Recently, I delivered a major project that perfectly reflects this technical requirement: the new portal for Merlin Distributor (merlindistributor.com).

In this article, I will explain the technical behind-the-scenes of this project and how I adapted web development platforms to serve a massive international distribution operation focused strictly on generating quotes and estimates.

Who is Merlin Distributor?

Based in Doral (Florida, USA), Merlin Distributor is one of the largest distributors of professional audio, video, cinema, and broadcast equipment in Latin America and Brazil.

They are official distributors for technology giants such as Sony, Panasonic, Canon, Datavideo, Fujinon, and Manfrotto. The website’s target audience is not the end consumer, but rather resellers, film production companies, and major TV broadcasters that purchase high-value equipment in volume.

The Challenge: Replacing Traditional E-commerce with a Quote Catalog

In the B2B market for heavy and highly technical equipment, there is no generic “Buy Now” button with standard shipping calculations. Sales require complex negotiations, international tax analysis, and specialized logistics. The portal needed to function as a product catalog focused exclusively on quote requests.

As an independent programmer specializing in WordPress and complex infrastructures, I implemented the following solutions into the site’s programming:

1. Advanced Quote Request System (Catalog Mode)

The first major adaptation was disabling the conventional virtual store format. I programmed a system where clients can browse high-tech equipment and add items of interest to a “Quote List”. Once the selection is finalized, the quote form is triggered directly to Merlin’s commercial and engineering teams, with all data perfectly structured to accelerate response times.

2. Information Architecture for a Massive Portfolio

We are dealing with hundreds of technical items — from PTZ Cameras and Audio Mixers to Cinematic Lenses and LiveU Transmission Systems. I programmed a robust category tree and advanced search filters categorized by major Brands. Database speed and accuracy were absolute priorities to ensure that resellers could find technical specifications quickly, without any system lag.

3. Internationalization, UX, and Performance

Being a US-based company that primarily serves Brazil and Latin America, the platform was structured to handle traffic from different geographical regions, ensuring high availability and fast loading speeds. The design and code were built with a strong focus on responsive UX (User Experience), allowing seamless technical consultations of products and manuals via smartphone or desktop directly from editing suites.

The Result: A Powerful Sales Tool

The launch of the new Merlin Distributor website is not just a layout update. It is the delivery of a technological asset that automates the capture of qualified leads, organizes quote requests from international resellers, and strengthens the company’s authority as the premier audiovisual distributor in the Americas.

Need to modernize your distributor’s B2B sales operation?

If your company sells wholesale, acts as a distributor, or deals with custom orders and quotes, using a generic e-commerce platform can bottleneck your sales. You need a B2B platform designed specifically for your clients’ approval workflows.

As an independent programmer, I build complex, fast, and optimized online catalogs designed to attract the biggest clients in your market.
